Particle Physics Workshop:

The particle physics workshop will introduce children to the world of the infinitesimally small. The older KS3/4 learners will be introduced to the Standard Model of Particle Physics and particle detectors, while younger KS2 children will be presented the sub-atomic world with particle families and their interactions. All activities will start with a short introduction where the basis of the practical activities will be set. The role of the scientific method, and the current research avenues will also be highlighted. Two main experimental methods will be explained in some detail: light detection and charged particle detection. For the younger children, the idea and scope of particle accelerator and experiments will be explained. The introduction will include all the information necessary to conduct the experiments / activities. Older students will then use the experimental setups to run experiments, collect and analyse data, and draw conclusions; at the end of the day, results and conclusions will be discussed collectively. Younger children will design and make art & craft particle models based on their fundamental characteristics; they will then elaborate on the concept of particle interactions via an artistic medium of their choice (writing, drawing etc.); at the end of the day the objects will be presented and discussed collectively.

Exoplanet Workshop:

Exoplanets are planets that are found orbiting stars outside the Solar system. 30 years ago we did not know whether any existed. Now, astronomers think there are more planets than stars in the Universe. older KS3/4 learners will learn about exoplanets, calculate their orbits, and understand how to find some using the transit method in a workshop that will also describe the latest in exoplanet research, and the concept of habitable zone. Meanwhile, younger KS2 children and their accompanying parent(s) can take place in an adapted workshop to teach basic concepts of astronomy: what are stars, and planets, and distances in the Universe.
