Writing from the Jaws of Death: the First World War diary of Ernest William Hornung

Ernest William ('Willie') Hornung (1866-1921), brother-in-law of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was himself a respected author. At the outbreak of the First World War Hornung became heavily involved in war work with the YMCA. Between November 1917 and March 1918 Hornung wrote a diary in which he describes his experiences, working behind the front line in France and setting up a library and rest hut for the troops.
